We were hearing talk of the Nexus 7 for several months prior to its
June-unveiling at Google I/O. Now it seems there's a Nexus 7 2 to be
talking about. Reuters cites two sources that say there will be another
Nexus 7 launched in July, this one packing Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset
as opposed to Nvidia's Tegra 3. Other details supplied to Reuters
include a thinner bezel and a higher screen display.
Though the Nexus 7 is less than a year old, Google's commitment to
the 7-inch market is not misplaced. In the last 18 months, the market
has exploded with the arrival of the likes of Amazon, Apple and Google.
Anyone hoping to dominate the segment really does need to stay on top of
things like power, design and pricing. Google's Nexus 7 is one of the
lowest priced tablets available. It's not clear if the company will
retain the same pricing, but we imagine that will be the case,
considering how much of a draw that $199 price tag can be. In fact,
Reuters sources say the company may even offer the new model for even
less ($149) while the old model would be heavily discounted.
The current generation Nexus 7 packs a 7-inch, 1280 x 800 HD display,
Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 processor under the hood alongside a 12-core
GPU and 1GB RAM, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS, a gyroscope, an
accelerometer, a mic, and a 1.2-megapixel camera on the front of the
tablet. Pricing is $200 for the 16GB and $250 for the 32GB.
