Samsung surprised everyone by releasing two new smartphones in
parallel, which will start in the European market next month and then
make its way to the U.S. some time in the future. Those who
have experienced the Galaxy Note II 5.5 inch will know how much Samsung
enjoys a large screen, which they have taken even further with the new
Galaxy Mega 5.8 inch and 6.3 inch phones. To put that in perspective,
that is the distance between the average thumb and middle finger in
diagonal screen size.
The two phones don't have the same specifications either. The larger
Galaxy Mega 6.3 inch features an "HD" display (most likely 1280 x 720)
with a so-far-unbranded 1.7 GHz dual core
processor. The amount of RAM remains a mystery, but we know the phone
will run on Google's Android 4.2. Due to the 8 megapixel camera, LTE
& HSPA radios and GPS & GLONASS, the phone uses a 3,200 mAh
battery to power it. Storage is expandable with a microSD card up to 64
GB. Two variants with 8 GB and 16 GB internal storage will be available.
The smaller 5.8 inch phone is a bit less impressive, with a lower resolution (960 x 540) and a SoC running at 1.4 GHz dual core. This model will only be available with an HSPA radio (so no 4G/LTE) and only comes with 8 GB of internal storage. Despite neither of the phones having an S-Pen like the Galaxy Note phones, they do come with the software perks such as Samsung's Group Play, WatchON, Samsung Link, S Translator, ChatOn, S Memo, S Planner and split screen multitasking mode.
Pricing and specifics on availabilities remain scarce, but we are hoping for a slightly kinder pricing strategy than the Samsung S4 and the Note II. Do you think the larger screen sizes are more efficient or easier to work with, and at what point does the size become too much (or has it already)?
