Since its inception in the early 2007, iPhone has been the number one Apple flagship product. The company spent over 150 million dollars on developing the product, filled well over 200 patents and purchased the iphone.com domain for 1 million dollars. It was indeed a worthy investment. The product is more than a success, it’s an icon. Since then, the sales have reached record numbers and not just by the product itself but the accessories and the App Store applications have also brought a lot of income to the company. The iPhone never stopped improving. The iPhone that we knew 4 years ago has changed and developed over and over, reinventing itself to meet the latest trends and demands. A number of 4 models have been released since 2007 and that is what it took to get Apple iPhone of the verge of success. These models are the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and of course, the latest iPhone 4. Did Apple stopped? No! We are expecting iPhone 4GS and iPhone 5 in less than 2 months now. But let’s go into more details about how iPhone came to be one of the greatest handsets of all time.
The first iPhone had literally revolutionized the whole smartphone industry. A lot of people claim that Apple set the tone for this new mobile field with the iPhone handset. The novelty was mainly the touch screen that was the only one at that time to offer the wiping capability of a toggle button to off or on. Also, no other mobile device had the pinch-to-zoom functionality. All the other competitors on the market offered way too many buttons which took a lot of unnecessary space and they were also prone to significant mechanical damage after intense use. The industry had to change and they had to follow the Apple’s footsteps. The original iPhone was offering a superb screen and was far larger than what all the others were offering, which also set a new tone for the industry in terms of screen size. But the original iPhone didn’t last that long and people were starting to move on the more advanced handsets made by Sony Ericsson and Nokia. Cell phone recycling was now calling the original iPhone to the bench. It was time for a new handset.
Within the next year, Apple released a new best selling handset, the iPhone 3G. This gadget was an upgraded version of the original iPhone which also featured a 3G embedded capability. It also included a GPS component, a proximity sensor, an accelerometer and a sensor for ambient light. The most important feature was still the 3G functionality which allowed users to download and access demanding applications in a far more easier fashion. The bandwidth difference between 2G and 3G is tremendous and it enabled iPhone the access to a lot of media intensive applications.
From an aesthetics standpoint, the iPhone 3G was a bit different. It was thinner with a sleek plastic body design that was replacing the old body made out of metal, hence reducing the weight dramatically and making the iPhone a more elegant device. The GSM signal was highly improved and there was only one serious downside for this gadget: the iOS 4 was a bit more powerful for iPhone 3G to take, so in order to experience a lag-less interaction with the smartphone the user had to downgrade to iOS3.
This article continues with Part 2, in which we will discuss the latest two iPhone products, the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.
